The Episcopal Church has effectively voted to allow the full inclusion of gay clergy, even as bishops. It's the right call, controversial as it may be.

As an Episcopalian, I support allowing gays and lesbians to preach the word of God and to minister to the flock.

In the real world, gays hold all kinds of jobs -- in politics, in journalism, in law, even in the armed forces where they are terribly discriminated against.

The Episcopal Church made its decision at its annual general convention in California.

"God has called and may call" gays in committed relationships to "any ordained ministry" in the church, the resolution says.

Episcopalians are no strangers to controversy over the gay issue. My church consecrated V. Gene Robinson as its first openly gay bishop six years ago.

The latest move likely will prompt more conservative churches in the Anglican order to think about breaking away from the Episcopal Church in America.

It's simply too bad such a split has to occur, further dividing the faith.
